I am a qualitative researcher and Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Flinders University.
My work mostly focusses on human-nonhuman animal relationships. This includes using multispecies methods to look at the entangled experiences of human and nonhuman animals in everyday life and critically understanding how nonhuman animals considered “pets”, “pests”, and “food” and other categories are treated and represented. I also work on climate change and disaster resilience and neoliberalism in higher education. You can find my new book on Critical Pet Studies here and read more of my work in the publications tab.
I co-founded the International Association of Vegan Sociologists with Corey Wrenn in 2020, and we run an annual, free, online conference and other events to support scholars in our field. I also co-founded the Australian Sociological Association’s Sociology & Animals Thematic Group and am the current chair of the Australasian Animal Studies Association. Building community is so important to the growth, critical development and enjoyment of our field — if you are an animal studies scholar (or similar) please do get involved. We would love to have you!
I am available to supervise PhD and Masters students. If you are interested in discussing further study options please contact me here.
